Consulting
Linux/BSD
My involvement with web publishing led me back to Unix (something
I'd left behind in college). My home office network includes
several Linux
and OpenBSD
boxes, each providing a different function.
Linux
The bulk of my Linux work revolves around web application
and database servers. Apache,
PHP and
MySQL
are staples. And in addition to Perl
and some shell scripting, I'll soon be able to claim Python
among the languages I can employ.
*BSD
I use OpenBSD for firewalls, mailservers, DNS servers, and
network sentinels. I recommend OpenBSD for almost every server
application I can think of. It is easily the simplest and
most secure of the free Unixes.
I'm familiar with NetBSD,
and, to a lesser extent, FreeBSD.
But because FreeBSD is an ancestor of what now undergirds
Mac OS X, I expect it won't be too unfamiliar!
While I'm familiar with operating these systems on Intel/AMD
hardware, most of my experience revolves around running them
on older inexpensive Macintosh hardware machines that
are competent to any light- to medium-duty internet service.
For those who need the state of the art, I have the resources
to make that happen, as well.
