Maps

I have produced various maps of widely varying technical difficulty for McDougall-Littell and Three Communication Design — from simple, illustrative, black and white maps to highly-detailed, historically-accurate, full-color topographical maps and frames for animated video maps.

US Physical Map

This map was produced for McDougall-Littell's American history project "The Americans" during a series of projects in which I produced many dozens of maps, both four color and line art. It was the most difficult of a series of maps which required precision alignment between elements produced in PhotoShop, Illustrator, and QuarkXPress. This required integration with data from the U.S. Geological Survey at a time when desktop tools were quite crude. I am enormously proud of this map.

Chapter Openers

This project, also for McDougall-Littell's "The Americans", required assembling a team of expert assistants. Maps were constructed in PhotoShop and Illustrator — often synthesized from many sources which were of incompatible projections — while callouts were constructed in QuarkXPress. Every element was precisely aligned so that Quark elements would cast shadows into the PhotoShop layer, creating a sense of physical depth.
