Silver Burdett Ginn's "Literature Works"

SBG had contracted Ligature to produce this text. I was fortunate
to work on this project with a great team of designers and
editors led by one brilliant editor named Ernestine Giesecke.
She drew editorial input from each member of the team regardless
of specialty. She was also eager to learn the technical side
of publishing, and I was happy to show her. By the end of
the first phase of the project, she was doing as much of the
desktop publishing as I was of the editing. Though the project
as a whole was fraught with crippling indecision, our team
(one of six such teams) made every deadline. Though our team
had been charged originally with composing and producing two
chapters, Ernestine and I were selected along with a few from
other teams to finalize the entire book. It was such a difficult
project to carry off. But I'm proud to have been part of it.
I had no hand in the design or production of this cover.
Scott Foresman's "Literature"

At Scott Foresman, the production department runs like clockwork.
Jim Byrne is one of the biggest reasons for this. He runs
a highly systematized production process that produces significant
measurable progress, and almost always gets the staff home
in time for dinner. "Literature" was the first of
many projects with Scott Foresman, and my only in-house project
for them. It was a pleasure to find myself with plenty of
free time when the work day was done.
Inspired by Jim's wealth of processes, I developed several
methods for PhotoShop production of certain layout elements
during this project that ensured quick and consistent production.
This cover is not my design. I helped produce several other
covers in this series however.
